Azelaic acid vs salicylic acid: what’s the difference?

Azelaic acid and salicylic acid are two of the most widely used actives in blemish-focused skincare. They are often mentioned in the same breath, but they work in different ways, and the right choice depends on the skin type and product concept you are formulating for.

How blemishes form

Blemishes develop when oil, dead skin cells and bacteria become trapped in hair follicles. Any ingredient strategy for blemish-prone skin therefore has to address some combination of four factors: sebum production, keratinization, bacterial colonization and inflammation.

Salicylic acid: the oil-soluble exfoliant

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), traditionally derived from willow bark. Because it is oil-soluble, it penetrates deeper into the pore than alpha hydroxy acids, where it dissolves sebum buildup and acts as a chemical exfoliant. It is particularly associated with oily skin concepts. Its exfoliating action can, however, be experienced as harsh by sensitive skin, and its regulatory status in some markets is under review.

Azelaic acid: the multifunctional all-rounder

Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally found in grains. Rather than focusing on sebum, it combines several complementary activities in one molecule: antimicrobial activity against the micro-organisms associated with blemishes, keratolytic and comedolytic support, antioxidant activity, and support for a more even-looking skin tone, including the appearance of post-blemish marks. Importantly, it is selective: it targets opportunistic organisms while leaving the beneficial skin flora intact.

  • Mechanism: salicylic acid primarily dissolves sebum; azelaic acid primarily targets bacteria, keratinization and visible redness
  • Skin feel: azelaic acid is generally experienced as gentler, making it the preferred option for sensitive and redness-prone skin concepts
  • Positioning: azelaic acid supports a broader claim territory, clarity, tone, redness and scalp applications

Can they be combined?

Yes. In moderate concentrations the two actives can complement each other in a routine or formulation, combining deep pore cleansing with multifunctional skin-clarity support. As always, total exfoliating load and skin tolerance should guide the final formula, supported by appropriate moisturization and sun protection in the routine.
