Azelaic acid in suncare and after-sun products
Azelaic acid is best known for skincare, but it also has a well-documented place in suncare and after-sun products, particularly for skin that is prone to blemishes or uneven tone.
Why azelaic acid fits sun-exposed skin
Sun exposure is one of the main drivers of an uneven skin tone: UV radiation stimulates melanin production, which can lead to dark spots, sun-related discoloration and the worsening of existing post-blemish marks. Azelaic acid addresses exactly this territory. As a tyrosinase inhibitor it helps regulate melanin synthesis, with a selective effect on highly active melanocytes, the ones responsible for spots, while normal pigmentation remains untouched.
A key practical advantage: azelaic acid does not increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV light. Unlike several other brightening or exfoliating actives, it is therefore suitable for products worn in the sun.
In sunscreen formulations
In sun protection products, azelaic acid adds skin-benefit value beyond the UV filter system: antioxidant support against environmental stress, comedolytic activity that keeps pores clear (relevant for blemish-prone users who often struggle with rich sunscreen textures), and support for an even-looking tone.
In after-sun and spot-focused products
After sun exposure, the priority shifts to comfort and tone. Azelaic acid supports visibly calmer skin, and in spot-lightening applications concentrations of 5–10% are typical, while broader tone-focused formulations use levels between 3 and 15% depending on positioning and format.
