Acne-fighting ingredients compared: how azelaic acid stacks up

Formulators developing products for blemish-prone skin can choose from a wide range of active ingredients, each with its own mechanism, benefits and limitations. This overview compares the most common options and explains why azelaic acid has become the ingredient of choice for modern, skin-friendly formulations.

Azelaic acid

A naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid and an emerging leader in blemish-focused cosmetics. It is selective: it acts against the opportunistic micro-organisms associated with blemishes without harming the beneficial skin flora. It combines antimicrobial, keratolytic, comedolytic and antioxidant activity, supports a more even-looking skin tone, and shows no significant side effects at cosmetic use levels. Its main formulation challenge is solubility, which can be managed with glycols, surfactant systems or organogel approaches. In the EU it is permitted in cosmetics without concentration restrictions.

Benzoyl peroxide

A widely known antibacterial agent, but non-selective: it affects beneficial micro-organisms as well. It has been banned in EU cosmetic products due to its cytotoxic properties and the risk of benzene formation, and its status in other markets is under review. It can also cause dryness and irritation.

Retinoids (retinoic acid, adapalene, tazarotene)

Powerful actives with well-documented effects, but with significant drawbacks for cosmetic use: dryness of lips, skin and mucous membranes, photosensitivity, an initial worsening phase, and teratogenic risks. For these reasons they are restricted to pharmaceutical use and are not an option for cosmetic formulations.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)

Glycolic and lactic acid are effective exfoliants with a good safety profile, but they are not true blemish-targeting actives, they support skin renewal rather than addressing bacteria or sebum directly. They can complement other actives in a routine.

Salicylic acid

An oil-soluble keratolytic exfoliant that penetrates the pore and dissolves sebum. Effective for oily skin concepts, but potentially irritating for sensitive skin, and its regulatory status is being evaluated in some markets.

Sulfur

One of the oldest ingredients in this category, with germicidal properties, but its unpleasant odor makes it rare in modern formulations.

Antibiotics

Strictly pharmaceutical territory. Beyond regulatory boundaries, antibiotic use raises resistance concerns and disrupts the skin microbiome, the opposite of what modern microbiome-friendly skincare aims for.
